From Panes the N-621 threads the narrow La Hermida gorge to Potes, then climbs into the heart of the Picos to the cable-car station at Fuente Dé. Handy from the Santander/Bilbao ferries — a perfect first or last leg of a Spain tour.
From Panes the N-621 threads La Hermida gorge — limestone walls, a river, not much sky — to Potes, then climbs into the Picos to the cable-car station at Fuente Dé. Thirty-three miles, about an hour moving. The gorge is the famous squeeze; Potes is the town stop (Torre del Infantado, food at Hotel Rebeco or Posada La Cuadrona); Fuente Dé is the photograph, walls going up from the car park. Fuel at Estación de Servicio Liébana. No alpine winter closure on this whole length, but the gorge ices and can close in snow like any mountain N-road.
Handy from the Santander and Bilbao ferries — first day or last day of a Spain trip, which is already how Picos & the Pyrenees starts. Summer coaches in the gorge; early is quieter. The cable car is optional and queues.
This is a gorge road then a mountain dead-end, not a high pass in the Stelvio sense. Drive the gorge without stopping on the white line, park at Fuente Dé, and let the ferry be why you are here. Potes is the place to sleep and eat; Fuente Dé is a car park at the end of the road with a cable car queue. The gorge has short tunnels and cyclists. From the ferries, this is a gentle first day if you do not add the Pyrenees the same afternoon. Beyos (N-625) is the sister gorge if you want a second squeeze. Do not stop in the Hermida for a photo the Fuente Dé walls will better.
