A collapsed cavern turned canyon: the road squeezes up between sheer limestone shoulders out of Castleton at 20% — short, spectacular and best at dawn before the crowds.

Out of Castleton the road squeezes into a collapsed cavern: limestone walls, a 20% (about 1-in-5) climb, and not much width. It is four miles. Walkers use the same tarmac to reach the caves and Mam Tor. The surface is fine; the problem is the other users and the gradient if you meet a bus coming down. Speedwell Cavern sits at the foot. The Mam Nick car park above is the better place to leave a car if you want the ridge, not the pass.

Dawn, or a winter weekday, is when you can see the walls without a pedestrian in the middle of them. Summer middays are a crawl. Fuel in Castleton or Buxton. Three Roofs Café is the food in the village before you commit.

Pair it with Snake Pass and the Cat and Fiddle for the Peak District weekend. Winnats is the punctuation, not the day.

Do not stop in the canyon for the photograph everyone already took from the Mam Tor path. Drive it, come back if you must, and park where the signs tell you. Castleton fills before the pass does. Park in the village car parks, walk to Speedwell if you want the cave, then drive the canyon as a through-move. Mam Tor's ridge is the walk; Mam Nick is the car park for that walk, not a driving viewpoint in the Winnats. The 20% is short. Meeting a bus is the bit that needs a decision, not a photograph. Dawn in April is the drive; August at eleven is a pedestrian street that happens to have tarmac. Fuel in Castleton or Chapel-en-le-Frith, not on the pass.
