Adriatic, Kotor, Durmitor & Llogara

Down the east shore of the Adriatic. The Magistrala from Split to Dubrovnik, the Kotor serpentine up to Cetinje, the Durmitor ring out of Žabljak, and Llogara Pass in Albania from Vlorë to Himarë. Six days with nights in Split or Makarska, Kotor or Cetinje, Žabljak, then Himarë. July and August are cruise-ship gridlock on the coast.

Getting there

Worth knowing: The Magistrala is 160 miles of D8 with buses and a 50 limit through every resort — two days of it, not one. Kotor's old road is not the new highway; it is hairpins above the bay, tight for a long wheelbase. Durmitor's Sedlo can still hold snow in June. Llogara is Albania; insurance and vignette rules change — check before you cross. Border queues at Debeli Brijeg in season. Fuel is easy on the coast and thinner on Durmitor — fill in Žabljak.
