The Engadin Passes

4 days · 4 driving roads · 83 miles of them · best June–September

Four Graubünden passes around the Engadin. Flüela from Davos to Susch, Julier from Tiefencastel to Silvaplana, Albula to La Punt, and Maloja dropping to Chiavenna in Italy. Overnight in St Moritz or Silvaplana. Short miles, high cols, the Bernina railway for company. Overnight in St Moritz or Silvaplana. Short miles, high cols, the Bernina railway for company, and coaches on the Julier from mid-morning.

Getting there

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle — Eurotunnel, about 36 min, up to 4/hour. Check sailings.

Worth knowing: All four close in winter; opening is typically late May or June depending on the year — check alpen-paesse.ch or the canton. Switzerland needs a motorway vignette if you use the A13/A2 to arrive. Julier is the all-year-ish one in mild winters; do not count on it. Maloja is a border into Italy. Fuel in Davos, Tiefencastel and Silvaplana; nothing reliable on the passes themselves. Coaches on Julier from mid-morning.
