Galloway & the Southern Uplands

4 days · 4 driving roads · 342 miles of them · best April–October

The quiet south. The Queen's Way through Galloway Forest Park, then the Mennock and Dalveen passes over the Lowthers to Wanlockhead — Scotland's highest village — and the South West Coastal 300 as the Dumfries loop that ties the Solway and the Rhins together. Four days if you actually drive the 300 rather than tick it.

Worth knowing: The SWC300 is 300 miles; four days is the floor, not the ceiling. Mennock is narrow and the Lowthers catch snow that the BBC weather map misses. No fuel at Wanlockhead. Galloway Forest is a Dark Sky Park — the café at Clatteringshaws has been in and out of works, so don't plan lunch on it. Fill in Newton Stewart, Sanquhar or Dumfries.
