Grossglockner, Gerlos & the Zillertal
3 days · 3 driving roads · 74 miles of them · best June–September
The Hohe Tauern in three days. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is the 1930s masterpiece; Gerlos Alpenstraße then links Krimml to the Zillertal, and the Höhenstraße runs the shelf above the valley. Overnight in Zell am See or Heiligenblut, then Zell am Ziller. Overnight in Zell am See or Heiligenblut, then Zell am Ziller. The waterfalls at Krimml are a walk, not a drive, and sit at the Gerlos end.
Getting there
⛴ Eurotunnel Le Shuttle — Eurotunnel, about 36 min, up to 4/hour. Check sailings.
Worth knowing: Grossglockner is a toll road, closed overnight by law, and shut in winter — in 2026 a car day ticket was in the mid-forties of euros; check grossglockner.at. Gerlos is also a toll. The Höhenstraße is narrow, unguarded in places, and not for a convoy. Fuel in Fusch, Heiligenblut and Zell am Ziller. The Krimml waterfalls car park is a separate stop and a walk.
