Before you go: Spectacular (and wild) in autumn storms
Five miles of bridges leaping between skerries in the open Atlantic, the Storseisundet bridge rearing like a ski jump — brief, world-famous, and worth every mile of the detour.
Five miles of Fv64 between Vevang and Kårvåg on Averøy: causeways and bridges over the Atlantic, Storseisundet rearing like a ski jump. It is brief, famous, and often wet. Surface is good. In autumn storms it is the spectacle the postcards imply, and it is also a road you can be blown about on. Eldhusøya has the café, loos, and a place to park; Storseisundet bru is the photograph — use a signed pull-off, not the carriageway on the crest of the bridge. Fuel at YX Averøy; Bjartmars Favorittkro is food nearby.
You will spend longer getting here than driving it. That is fine. Pair it with Trollstigen and Geiranger if you are on the fjord trip; it is already in that Great Escape. Dawn misses some of the tour buses.
Do not stop on the bridge for the shot everyone takes from Eldhusøya. Drive it both ways if you want, slowly, and let the weather be the entertainment. Averøy is an island; you need the rest of Fv64 or the Atlanterhavsveien approaches to make a day of it. In a storm, spray over the causeways is the show and the reason to keep two hands on the wheel. Tour buses time the bridge shot for midday — be earlier. Trollstigen is a couple of hours away if the weather on the coast is the wrong kind of weather. Park at Eldhusøya, walk the platform, then drive the bridges. The ski-jump shot of Storseisundet is from the signed pull-off on the south side, not from the live lane on the crest.

- Storseisundet bru viewpoint — Pull in on the Averøy side for the ski-jump shot of the 260 m bridge over open Atlantic.
- Eldhusøya kafé café — Herring-scale café under the boardwalk; daily June–August, weekends in spring and autumn.
- Eldhusøya toilets — Year-round toilets in the service building; the 700 m walkway stays open in storms.
- YX Averøy fuel — On Fv64 at Atlanterhavsvegen 3 — nothing on the causeways themselves.
- Bjartmars Favorittkro food — Independent Averøy inn just off the road; bacalao and clipfish in a 170-year-old timber house.
