Before you go: ⚠ Katara Pass (1,690 m) is regularly snowbound November–April; the parallel Egnatia Odos motorway tunnels are the winter alternative
The legendary old road over the spine of the Pindus, climbing from Ioannina's lake basin through the Metsovitikos gorge to the stone-built Vlach town of Metsovo and on over the once-feared Katara Pass. Since the Egnatia motorway took the lorries, it is a near-empty mountain playground of hairpins and high-altitude views.
Highlights of the Pindus Katara Pass Road

- Metsovo's stone mansions and mountain cuisine
- Traffic-free hairpins since the Egnatia opened
