The Peak District Weekend
2 days · 3 driving roads · 30 miles of them · best April–October
A tight two-dayer on the Dark and White Peak. Saturday takes the A57 over Bleaklow — Snake Pass — then squeezes up Winnats' limestone canyon out of Castleton. Sunday is the Cat and Fiddle, the well-sighted moorland blast from Macclesfield to Buxton, cameras and all. Stay in Castleton or Buxton; you can walk to the start of two of the three roads.
Worth knowing: Snake Pass closes in snow and after landslips — check before you leave Glossop. The Cat and Fiddle has average-speed cameras the length of the moor; it is a flow road, not a test track. Winnats is narrow, 20%, and full of walkers by ten. Fuel in Glossop, Buxton or Chapel-en-le-Frith — nothing on the moor.
