Arctic Norway: Helgeland to Varanger

The far north as a week of coast, not a highlight reel. Helgeland's Kystriksveien from Brønnøysund to Sandnessjøen, Senja's outer road, Andøya to Andenes, and Varanger out to Hamningberg. The miles between these roads are the trip; the named stretches are why you came. Overnight as the ferries and distances dictate — Bodø, Finnsnes, Andenes, Vadsø.

Getting there

⛴ Newcastle – Amsterdam — DFDS, about 16 h, daily (overnight). Check sailings.

Worth knowing: This is not four roads in a loop — it is 1,000 km of northing with four scenic-route sections on it. Seven days is the minimum; ten is better. Helgeland has ferries that are part of Fv17; miss a sailing and lose a half day. Senja and Andøya are close; Varanger is a day's drive further into Finnmark. Hamningberg road closes in winter. Fuel in Brønnøysund, Finnsnes, Andenes and Vadsø — then nothing. Midges, weather, and empty tanks are the hazards. Lofoten is on the existing fjords trip; this is the rest of the north.
